Version 12.0.1 – Time for an update
Operating a private cloud offers an organization numerous opportunities to provide IT applications with a high degree of confidentiality, security, and independence. Every component and every piece of software used can be defined and controlled within the system. However, if the organization lacks the necessary personnel or financial resources, disruptions in the IT landscape can quickly occur: security patches are missing or delayed, licenses are outdated, or software discontinued by the manufacturer continues to be used in production.
In our experience , HCL Domino and Notes are often inadequately updated and licensed in IT environments . This doesn't always result in an operational problem, but the security and functional advantages of current versions remain untapped. With version 12.0.1 of HCL Domino and Notes, released in December 2021, the first optimization of version 12.0 was available. In the past, this has been the starting point for many organizations to update.
The last fix pack for version 9.0.1 dates back to 2018. Version 9.0.1 itself dates back to 2013. Outdated versions increase the risk of data leaks . In the Kaspersky Global Corporate IT Security Risks Survey (ITSRS) from June 2020, over 5000 IT decision-makers in 31 countries were surveyed on this topic. 29% of companies with current software packages reported data leaks, while 65% of companies with outdated IT software were affected. The risks described fall into four categories:
Bugs : Software errors fixed in newer versions remain in older systems.
Incompatibility : Outdated software does not interact with new technology (operating systems, integrated applications).
Security vulnerabilities : Hackers can more easily exploit known weaknesses, increasing the risk of reputational damage and data loss.
Frustration : Poor performance and limitations in practice lead to loss of productivity and user frustration.
For versions 9.0.1 and 10.0.1 of HCL Domino and Notes, HCL Technologies has announced a list of support limitations ( Domino v9.0.x and Domino v10.0.x Support Update ) after December 31, 2021.
Start the new year now with the latest version of HCL Domino and Notes 12.0.1 .
In our previous blog posts over the past six months, we've been reporting on the new features of version 12 ( Domino v12 Upgrade Guide ). What can we expect in version 12.0.1 ? Over 145 bug fixes and numerous new features ( What's new in Domino 12.0.1 and What's new in Notes 12.0.1 ).
Online Meeting Integration: Users can now register accounts with external meeting services such as GoToMeeting, Teams, WebEx, Zoom, and Sametime. By registering an account, they can create a dynamic link to meetings in these services directly from their HCL Notes calendar.
DKIM support: Domino can use Domain Keys Identified Mail (DKIM) to sign messages sent by internal users to external internet domains.
Improvements to backup and restore: The Domino backup database can be combined with a third-party backup solution.
Improved name search to find Active Directory users: When Domino users want to add the names of Active Directory users or groups to Domino groups, database ACLs, or email messages, Active Directory can now be one of the directories available to them.
High-resolution database icons: Larger and better-designed icons with additional replica settings.
Compact Improvements: When using the `compact` command with the options `-c`, `-x | -X`, and `-restart`, a file named `<database>.restart` is created when the timeout specified by `-x` or `-X` is reached. Compressions can be decoupled in time.
Improvements regarding security features: iNotes ID files in email files are no longer used for users with ID Vault, new TOTP user messages, new qvault command option to update user data.
Visual improvements: Improved user interface for email drafts, better organization of calendar entries, and improved support for HTML rendering.
Retrieve archived emails: Users can restore archived emails or restore and delete them.
Should an update to version 12.0.1 not be possible at present: Version HCL Domino and Notes 11.0.1 will remain up-to-date, e.g. with the current Fixpack 4 and the upcoming Fixpack 5.
