Domino 2026: How much potential does your license hold?
Many companies have been reliably using Domino for years for applications, email, and collaboration. The platform fulfills its tasks – often so unobtrusively that hardly anyone checks what additional features are now available.
Domino 2026 offers a fresh perspective. The current version, HCL Domino 14.5.1, is far more than just a traditional application and mail server. Domino combines business applications, collaboration, integration, mobile access, and artificial intelligence on a single, controllable platform.
The crucial question is therefore: Are you already using everything that is technically possible and included in your license?
Domino 2026 stands for continuous development.
The year in question highlights the platform's regular innovation cycle. Existing Domino applications remain the foundation. Companies do not need to replace their proven solutions to utilize new features and products.
At the same time, the choice of operating model remains unchanged. Domino can be run in your own data center, in a private cloud, containerized, or within a hybrid architecture. Linux, in particular, offers a stable, secure, and cost-effective foundation for server operation.
This means that Domino remains suitable for companies and public sector clients who want to retain control over infrastructure, data storage and operational processes.
For production environments, we recommend the maintained Domino 2026 version, HCL Domino 14.5.1 with Fix Pack 1. HCL explicitly recommends the Fix Pack released in July 2026 for all customers using Domino or Notes 14.5.1.
Which opportunities are often not yet being used?
In many environments, usage remains focused on Domino Server, Notes, and existing business applications. However, the current CCB Term license includes additional components that open up new use cases.
Domino IQ
Domino IQ integrates artificial intelligence into the existing Domino architecture. Language models can be run locally or via connected model servers. This allows, for example, content summarization, information extraction from documents, or the integration of AI functions into existing applications.
Domino REST API
The Domino REST API provides data and functionality from existing Domino applications via modern, controllable interfaces. It thus creates a foundation for web applications, mobile solutions, and integration with other enterprise systems.
HCL Nomad
Nomad brings existing Domino applications to the browser and mobile devices without fundamental rewriting. This allows existing investments to be reused and opened up to new workplace models.
HCL Verse and HCL Traveler
Verse offers modern access to email and calendar. Traveler provides synchronization with mobile devices. Together, both products enable contemporary mobile collaboration based on your own Domino infrastructure.
HCL Domino Leap
Domino Leap enables the creation of form- and process-oriented applications using no-code and low-code methods. Business departments can implement requirements faster, while IT retains control over the platform, security, and operations.
HCL Enterprise Integrator
HCL Enterprise Integrator connects Domino with relational databases and other enterprise systems. Depending on the license and contract scope, existing data sources can be integrated and integration processes automated.
Which specific components may be used depends on the respective license model, the contract, and the proof of entitlement. This applies particularly to older perpetual licenses and additional integration products. Therefore, a license review should be the first step in any potential analysis.
Not every product is relevant to every company.
The goal is not to install as many components as possible. The crucial point is to select the functions that generate concrete operational benefits.
Typical questions include, for example:
Can existing Notes applications be used safely in the browser?
Should Domino data be provided via standardized APIs?
Are there suitable processes for a rapid low-code implementation?
Can mobile access to applications, email, and calendar be improved?
Can relational databases be more closely integrated with Domino?
Which applications or knowledge bases are suitable for the use of AI?
Which systems should continue to be operated entirely in our own data center?
These questions do not result in a general product list, but rather a prioritization tailored to the company.
This is how a Domino 2026 potential check works.
A joint potential assessment begins with an inventory. In doing so, we consider not only the installed Domino version, but also applications, interfaces, operating model, and licensing situation.
In the next step, we compare the existing environment with the capabilities of Domino 2026. For each relevant product, we check:
What technical or professional problem needs to be solved?
Is the required component covered by the license?
What installation and configuration are required?
What safety and operational requirements exist?
What effort and what concrete benefits can be expected?
Subsequently, suitable topics are prioritized. The result could be, for example, a pilot project for Nomad, opening up an application via the REST API, a first Domino IQ use case, or the introduction of Leap for a clearly defined business process.
Targeted development of existing investments
Domino 2026 offers the opportunity to gradually modernize a proven platform. Applications, data, permissions, and existing know-how are retained. New access methods, integrations, and AI functions can be added where they provide demonstrable added value.
Not every opportunity needs to be implemented immediately. The crucial thing is to understand the existing potential, set the right priorities, and develop a realistic technical roadmap from that.
